Insights

Leadership trends are evolving rapidly, driven by shifts in tenure, external appointments, and the changing demands placed on executive teams.

Boards must respond strategically to emerging global patterns in leadership dynamics.

Decoding Leadership Trends

Leadership trends today reflect a business landscape recalibrating for resilience, relevance, and long-term renewal. Among the Global 750, the average C-suite tenure has climbed to 5.1 years – an 11% increase over the past three years – indicating a growing preference for stability in uncertain times. CEO tenure within the Global 500 now averages seven years, yet leadership turnover is accelerating: Europe’s CEO departure rate has risen to 12%, up from a historic norm of 8%.

External appointments are reshaping the top table. In the Global 1500, 38% of CEO hires over the last three years have come from outside their organisations – a figure that has steadily increased over five consecutive years. Alongside this, diversity in leadership is making meaningful strides: 77% of Chief HR Officers in the Global 600 now self-identify as diverse, reflecting the evolving profile of leaders shaping talent and culture.

While board fundamentals remain consistent – average age 63, average tenure eight years, average size 11 members – the criteria for effective leadership are changing fast.

At CF Leadership, we work closely with CEOs and boards to make sense of these shifts and respond with purpose. Whether the focus is succession planning, building inclusive leadership teams, or realigning leadership models to meet strategic change, we help leaders take the right actions today to stay ahead of tomorrow.
